Always save a copy of your joystick profile in a safe location - every patch defaults your settings back to base settings.
And RSI aka Chris Rorberts always had a strange default set (even in Wing Commander ONE days).
They always assign the Rudder Axle to x, and the pitch to the twist axle - and changing this is always a hussle in the Alpha Interface.

Our mighty Administrator of many sweet words and honed social skills has once again used few words to be totally spot-on.
STAR CITIZEN is actually WAY easier to play with the mouse flightmodel.
Especially gimballed weapons as well as pinpoint aiming is way better used when flying mouse/keyboard.
BUT... using a HOTAS is just SOOOOO immersive.... so... at least for me... HOTAS (even want to buy the branded one with the extra trackballs, and maybe the keyboard)

There was a patch... it had 15.4 GB.
I forgot to export my Joystick profile....
Now I have to set it up... again... axis by axis... button by button.
Ouch...
Note2self: DO NOT FORGET TO EXPORT YOUR JOYSTICK PROFILE!
